How to Manage Your Chronic Pain

Living with chronic back pain is not easy. For many, it is a constant struggle – however, it does not have to define you. There are several ways to help alleviate the pain associated with chronic back pain.

Sometimes, patients without an easily identifiable source of pain are dismissed by doctors. This can make things difficult for the patient in trying to diagnose their pain. However, new research on chronic pain has brought a new awareness to understanding patients’ struggles.

Pain Management Options

There are many pain management techniques you can employ to help your chronic pain. There are noninvasive, non-drug options, noninvasive pharmacologic options, and in extreme cases, invasive options.

Noninvasive, non-drug options:

Noninvasive, non-drug options include some of the following: exercise, heat and cold therapies, electrotherapy, behavioral modification, and massage.

Noninvasive, pharmacologic options:

Noninvasive pharmacologic options include: pain medications, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDS, including aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.), muscle relaxants, narcotics, antidepressants, and neuromodulating medications. Using a pharmacological option to treat your pain should always be taken with the discretion and expertise of a trained medical professional.

Invasive options:

Some invasive pain management options include: injections, prolotherapy, radio frequency radioablation, and surgically implanted electrotherapy devices. When considering any of these options, speak with a healthcare professional to decide on the best treatment option for your back pain.
